Oklahoma City, Okla. - June 23, 2014 - The 2014 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Derby held its third day of competition on June 23 including the first go, first section of the $321,000 est. Non Pro, plus five ancillary classes for open and rookie riders. The NRHA Derby Non Pro continues on Tuesday with the finals being held Friday, June 27 in the Jim Norick Coliseum at Oklahoma State Fair Park in Oklahoma City.
The tone of this year’s event has been overwhelmingly upbeat, and with entries still being accepted, the show is expected to shatter all previous benchmarks. The strength of the show can be seen in this year’s non pro divisions; overall entries (611) are up more than 6% and the purse also will surpass the healthy increase seen last year.
NON PRO LEADERS
Although Genevieve Shifrin (Aspen, Colo., $39,425 NRHA LTE) qualifies for youth competition being under the age of 18, she took advantage of her nearly ten years of show experience to push her through today. She rode Bella Juice (Smart Like Juice x Bella Conquistador) to a score of 218 to lead the level (L) 4, L3 and youth non pro divisions. The 2009 mare with $21,300 in NRHA LTE is owned by Cache Performance Horses, LLC who also nominated her.
Tying for second in the L4 non pro division were Ron Thompson ($264,200 NRHA LTE) aboard Taris Dreamer and Jack Medows ($41,800 NRHA LTE) riding Surprizentheprincess (218).
Thompson, of Whitesboro, Texas, owns the 2009 mare that has earned nearly $140,000 in NRHA competition. Together, they have won an NRHA Futurity Prime Time Non Pro Championship, a National Reining Breeders Classic (NRBC) L4 Non Pro Championship and two NRBC Prime Time Non Pro Championships. Werner Hermus nominated Taris Dreamer (Magnum Chic Dream x Taris San Cutter, NRHA / Markel Insurance Futurity Sales consignment) to the NRHA Nomination Program.
Cuba, Missouri’s Jack Medows also carried the torch for youth non pro entries aboard Amy Medow’s 2009 mare. Surprizentheprincess (Jerry Lees Surprise x Princess In Diamonds, nominated by Clinton Anderson) has racked up more than $95,600 in NRHA Lifetime Earnings including L3, L2 and L1 non pro division championships with Jack at the 2014 NRBC. Medows leads the L2 and L1 non pro divisions.
Lisa Bissell (Ft. Valley, Ga., $165,140 NRHA LTE) and Double My Chics lead the prime time non pro division with a handicapped score of 218.5. Bissell owns the mare by Dreamn Bout Chics and out of Double My Quixote that has earned more than $10,200 in NRHA competition including a very successful showing at the 2014 Florida Classic Derby.

Tuesday will start at 8 a.m. in Coliseum with the second section of first go-round of the $321,000 est. Non Pro Derby. The Adequan Championship Arena starts at 9 a.m. with ancillary classes including the Rookie Level 1, Rookie Level 2, $1,000-added Novice Horse Open Level 1, $2,000-added Novice Horse Open Level 2, AQHA Open, APHA Open and APHA Solid Open.
