The first leg of preliminary competition, the herd work, is complete for Non Pro competitors at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Jack and Phoebe Cooke Memorial Derby in Paso Robles, Calif.
Patty Ralls, Gainesville, Texas, returned to her home state of California to show Hi Brow Duce High Brow CD x RPL Smart Lil Jewel x Peptoboonsmal), and made a big impression in the herd work preliminaries. Ralls maneuvered the 2010 stallion to a 221, earning the lead in the Non Pro, Intermediate Non Pro and Novice Non Pro divisions.
The Derby Amateur herd work leader is Parke Greeson, Wolfforth, Texas, who rode Checkn Out The Ladys (Im Countin Checks x No Lady Wood x Zack T Wood) to a 213.
Twelve competitors are vying for the Derby Non Pro Limited title. Claire Armstrong, Weatherford, Texas, rode Hal O Matic (Halreycious x Miss Hickory Hill x Doc's Hickory) to the lead in that division with a 214.
The NRCHA Derby preliminaries consist of three demanding events: herd work, rein work and cow work. The scores from the preliminary rounds determine who will advance to the clean-slate finals. Three division championships – the Amateur, Open Novice Horse and Non Pro Limited – are decided by the preliminary scores.
Other actionin Paso Robles included the Non Pro Bridle Spectacular herd work, where Greg Gartner, Alberta, Canada, topped the results sheet with a 219 aboard Smart Sassy Date (Smart Peppy Date x Montys Sassy Girl x Monty Doc).
