Located just steps away from Southern CA’s premier Del Mar polo fields, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, and in the thick of one of the most prominent equestrian communities, Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa is ideally located. Some of the finest horse trainers in the country live here, and the area was the site for the equestrian events during the 1984 Olympics.The drive into the affluent enclave of Rancho Santa Fe leading you to the resort passes elegant private stables, endless grassy polo fields, and quite often, a couple of locals on horseback. After a day at the races, guests can even saddle up at The Pony Room, the saloon style bar and restaurant serving strong sips named after betting terms such as the Neck Shot. Ever wonder what it’s like to spend a day in the saddle? Riding a dark brown stallion while learning the basics of grooming and tracking acres of country hills and meadows? The Cowboy for a Day package includes a full day of ranch-hand training at Blue Sky Ranch as they teach you how to ride, rope and tend to small herds of cattle. You’re sure to come back a rugged westerner.  Enjoy breakfast and lunch on the ranch, with a well-deserved apre hour in the afternoon. With over 160 horses and 60,000 acres of mountainous desert terrain, the ranch has a variety of riding options for riders of all skill levels. Experienced wranglers take guests out on guided tours through the Sonoran Dessert and up into the Rincon Mountains for regularly scheduled sunset, morning and mountain trail rides. Riding lessons are available for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders and once skilled riders pass the mandatory Lope Check, they are able to go out with the wranglers and qualified ranch guests. Other activities at the ranch include “Team Penning,” where riders spilt into teams for a series of time trials in which they must herd a group of cattle through a pre-set obstacle course while on horseback, and the more in depth, Harmony with Horses program. This three-hour private program taught by a champion horseback rider and equine therapists, participants learn to tap into their behaviors and characteristics by adjusting subtle movements and commands. As part of the program, guests maneuver through obstacle courses and race around barrels and learn the basics of lope riding.
