Young Horses Are Ready to Shine at Markel/USEF Selection Trial During This Weekend’s Dressage at Flintridge CDI*/Y/J in California

The pastoral grounds of the popular and historic Flintridge Riding Club in La Cañada-Flintridge, CA will become a bustling showcase for some of the West Coast's best dressage horses and riders this weekend during the annual Dressage at Flintridge CDI*/Y/J competition, May 23 - 26, 2013.

Officiating for the weekend's competition will be esteemed international judges Lorraine Macdonald (4* CAN), Jeanne McDonald (4* USA), Jane Weatherwax (4* USA), and Sandy Osborne (USEF "S").

All eyes will be looking towards future stars as Dressage at Flintridge will once again host the Markel/USEF Young Horse Western Selection Trial for this summer's FEI/WBFSH World Breeding Championships in Verden, Germany. As one of only two  Selection Trials in the nation, horses and riders will have to perform to the best of their ability in order to earn a once-in-a-lifetime invitation to represent the U.S. on the world stage.

Leading the charge will be last year's selection trial Reserve 5-Year-Old Champion "Caliente DG" ridden by Craig Stanley, who will now seek another championship sash as a 6-year-old.  However, the pair will have to contend with four additional talented combinations in the 6-year-old division, including Charlotte Jorst with "Vitalis" and Ashlyn DeGroot riding "Calvin Klein", both of which are currently placed in the top 12 of the Markel/USEF national young horse ranking list.

Among the nine-horse field of 5-year-olds, both Stacee Collier on "déjà vu" and Karen Ball riding "Calimero" are nationally-ranked, and will be competing against Olympian Kathleen Raine aboard "Finesse" as well as the talented mare "Dalina DG" (ridden by Ashlyn DeGroot) which placed in the top 10 at the 2012 Markel/USEF National Young Horse Dressage Championships in Illinois as a 4-year-old.

Three non-stop rings of national dressage competition will be highlighted throughout the weekend.  In addition, international CDI classes held at the Prix St. Georges/Intermediaire I, Young Rider, and Junior levels will feature some of California's top dressage talent, including 2012 U.S. Olympic Dressage Team members Steffen Peters and Jan Ebeling riding up-and-coming mounts in the small tour.  Adding to the show festivities will be a pizza party on Thursday afternoon as well as a wine and cheese welcome reception on Friday.  On Saturday night, the highlight of the weekend will be Flintridge's annual tradition:  this year's "Red, White & Blue Musical Evening" will feature musical freestyles, special exhibitions, live music, great food, and fun for all ages.

Dressage at Flintridge CDI*/Y/J is an official qualifying competition for the FEI/WBFSH World Breeding Championships, in addition to the USEF National Intermediaire, Brentina Cup, and Pony Rider Championships; AGCO/USEF National Junior and Young Rider Championships; Adequan FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships; Markel/USEF National Young and Developing Horse Dressage Championships presented by; USDF year-end awards and regional championships; and California Dressage Society (CDS) Horse of the Year awards and annual championship show. A myriad of special awards will be presented including Flintridge Riding Club perpetual trophies, and Sunday's schedule includes designated qualifying tests for the new Markel/Cornerstone Young Talent Search (YTS) where four, five, and six-year-old horses will attempt to earn scores towards an invitation for the Finals in June as well as over $10,000 in prize money and awards.
