Chris Dawson and Travelin Jonez Lead NRCHA Hackamore Classic Open; Tammy Hays and Two Kitties Top Non-Pro

Although it's spring, the second of May felt like a crisp, bright winter day at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Hackamore Classic in Pueblo, Colo., where phase two of the competition, the rein work, wrapped up outdoors under sunny skies. 

Chris Dawson, Jacksboro, Texas, holds the top two spots in the Open composite. He is the overall leader after two events with a 296 on Travelin Jonez (Smart Chic Olena x Travelin With Sass x Travalena). The 5-year-old stallion, also owned by Dawson, also won today's rein work round with a 148. 

Dawson and A Spoonful O Sugar (Hes A Peptospoonful x Poco Smokum Oak x Smokum Oak) are close behind, in second place overall with a 293.5 composite. They earned a 147.5 in today's rein work round. The 5-year-old mare is owned by Cryin Coyote Ranch.

Rounding out the top three in the Open composite, with a 292.5, is PRF Spoonful Of Gold (Hes A Peptospoonful x Sons Miss Sprat x Sons Rushette), shown by Corey Cushing, Scottsdale, Ariz. The 2008 stallion is owned by Cathy Corrigan Frank. They won Wednesday's herd work round with a 149, and maneuvered to a 143.5 in the reining.

The composite lead in the Intermediate Open belongs to Chickarey (Dual Rey x Sonita Lena Chick x Smart Chic Olena), a 2008 mare shown by Robert Chown, Gainesville, Texas. Chickarey is owned by Dominic Conicelli, Collegeville, Penn. They scored a 144.5 in both the herd work and rein work for a composite 289.

In the Limited Open, the lead in the composite belongs to Shes Wright On (Hes Wright On x Sue C Shiner x Shining Spark), shown by Kelby Phillips and owned by Garth and Amanda Gardiner. The 4-year-old mare has a 285.5 total score in the herd and rein work.

The Level 1 Limited Open leader is High Output Dually (High Sign Nugget x Doc Olena Lachina) shown by Geoff Hoar and owned by Greg Hoar. They scored a 141 in the cow work and a 139.5 in the rein work for a 280.5 on two events.

The Hackamore Classic Non-Pro leader is Tammy Hays, Nocona, Texas. Hays and Two Kitties (Smooth As A Cat x SR Jaguar x Doc O'Lena) spun and slid their way to the high-scoring Non-Pro rein work, a 143, for a total 284 on two events.

Leading the Intermediate Non-Pro after two events is Dave Ferguson, riding Cats Bandito (WR This Cats Smart x Dandy Fine Bandit). They scored a 139 in the herd work and a 140.5 in the rein work for a total 279.5. 

The Novice Non-Pro Hackamore Classic leader is Jennifer Neel, Millsap, Texas. She rode Ze Kit Cat (Zezes Pepto Cat x Hickorys Diablo x Docs Hickory) to a 142 in the herd work and a 135.5 in the rein work for a 277.5 on two events.

Two riders share a 270 composite for the lead in the Amateur division: Donathon Archuleta and Lilrowdyonetime (One Time Pepto x Oaks Rowdycat x High Brow Cat); and Sandra Kaskey on Dunitontopoftheworld (Dun It Big x Photons Cowgirl x Photon).

The Hackamore Classic resumes tomorrow, Friday, May 3, with the final phase of competition, the cow work, for the Non-Pro contestants. Open Hackamore Classic riders show in the cow work on Saturday. Friday's schedule also includes the Shining Lil Nic Bridle Spectacular.
