The 21-year-old Hanoverian mare, owned by Whipstick Farm and shown by Hannah Murrin of New York, NY, proved that age is only a number by topping the field of 30 in the NAL Final. Murrin was overcome with emotion.
“It’s been really exciting. I’m about to cry,” said Murrin. “I am so happy that my parents gave me this opportunity to come here and the opportunity to have such a wonderful horse. It meant so much to win here.”
Seven horses made it into the jump-off by going without fault in the first round. Alexandra Cherubini and Equifit Carlos posted the first clear round in a time of 37.019 seconds, which eventually left them in third place. Murrin had two horses that made it into the jump-off, but she went first on Landame. The pair took over the lead, going penalty free in 35.831 seconds. Rebecca Smith and Kick the Clouds went clear, but just a bit too slow finishing in a time of 36.070 for second place. Four more riders, including Murrin on Valentina, tried to take over the lead, but were unsuccessful. No one was more proud than Murrin’s trainer and owner of Landame, Frank Cunniffe.
“She is in better shape than I am,” said Cunniffe about the mare. “Everyone laughed when I bought her, because of her age, but she proved them wrong. She really did a super job and so did Hannah.”
The North American League (NAL) offers year-long Series in six divisions – Children’s Hunter, Adult Hunter, Children’s Jumper, Adult Jumper, Pony Jumper, and Low Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper. The NAL includes classes at hundreds of horse shows across the United States and Canada and features two year-end finals: National Finals at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show and West Coast Finals at the Las Vegas National Horse Show.
