Shane Sweetnam of Ireland had a lucky night at the 67th Annual Pennsylvania National Horse Show on Friday.

The 31-year- old rider won the $5,000 Open Jumper Speed class riding Solerina, owned by Sweet Oak Farm, and captured the Open Jumper Speed Championship with Cyklon 1083, owned by Spy Coast Farm. Sweetnam was surprised when he was called into the arena for the Championship award.
“I thought Laura Chapot won it,” said Sweetnam. “It turned out that Wednesday’s Gambler’s Choice class had bonus points, so the win gave us the Championship. It was a nice surprise.”
Laura Chapot almost won the Championship and the class. The resident of Neshanic Station, NJ finished second on Bradberry going fault free in a time of 53.082 seconds, which was good enough to earn the Reserve Championship. Chapot also took the third spot in the class going clear on Zealous in 54.428 seconds, but the night belonged to Sweetnam. The Irish pair bested the field of 43 entries posting the fastest clear round in 52.983 seconds.
“I was early in the class so I thought I would get beat, but I had a little bit of luck and it worked out well,” said Sweetnam. “Solerina is very quick and she really wants to be careful. She’s a very competitive horse and she’s had a lot of good results. I’m very happy with her. Hopefully I’ll be back in the same place tomorrow night.”
Sweetnam was referring to the featured event at the Pennsylvania National, the $85,000 FEI World Cup Grand Prix de Penn National, which takes place on Saturday.
