Things are just now calming down at beautiful Audley Farm, breeders of Aberdeen Angus and Thoroughbred racehorses. Just a few short weeks ago at Keeneland, their yearling topped the filly sales chart, going for a cool $1.3 million.
The filly, dubbed Hip #45 until her new owners file a name for her with the Jockey Club, is a half-sister of Bodemeister, both were bred by Audley Farms, and both were raised exclusively on Pennfield, from in-utero to the time of sale.
Jamie McDiarmid, horse manager for Audley Farms said, “We believe that nutrition is everything in how these babies turn out, and how well the mares maintain condition. We are blessed with fantastic grass and hay, and we continue that with the same quality in our feed, Pennfield.”
He went on, chuckling, “We nearly left Pennfield this year. Everyone’s been going up in price because of commodity prices, and it caused us to think maybe we should explore other options. After 13 years with Pennfield, and never – not even once – an inconsistent bag, it took me about three seconds of exploring, and I was back ordering Pennfield. There is simply no comparison, in both the feed and the results.”
There are four Pennfield formulas commonly found in the Audley Farm feed rooms: Ultra Broodmare & Yearling’s Choice, Ultra Foal’s Choice, Fibregized, and Ultra Easy Keeper’s Choice balancer pellet.
McDiarmid concluded, “Pennfield’s caloric density combined with our excellent forage means that even our pregnant mares often don’t need the full recommended amount of Broodmare & Yearling’s Choice to maintain condition. So, we find that the Ultra Balancer pellet, at a little over thirty cents a day, is an outstanding value to make sure everyone’s getting all the vitamin and mineral support they need to grow correctly. I won’t say we’ve eradicated OCD and other developmental issues, but we’ve certainly minimized them with our nutritional program.”
The yearling filly Hip #45 is by Smart Strike, out of Storm Cat daughter Untouched Talent. Bodemeister, grade I winner and the favorite and ultimate second place finisher in the first two legs of this year’s Triple Crown, is also out of Untouched Talent, and is by Empire Maker.
