Craig Thompson Wins Augusta Cutting Futurity Open Title

The hottest cowboy on the cutting circuit continued doing what he does best late Saturday night.

Craig-Thompson-OhCayDoOverAboard Oh Cay Do Over, Craig Thompson won his second major event in two months. Thompson and his mount marked 222.5 to win the Futurity Open finals by two points at James Brown Arena.

“I just thank God, first and foremost,” Thompson said. “It’s just an honor and privilege to get down there and get my horse shown under these tough conditions. There were a lot of other great horses and trainers competing, and the cattle were a little tough.”

Thompson and Oh Cay Do Over earned the first-place check of $13,577. Thompson also finished in second place on Lach Down at 220.5, tying Dirk Blakesley and Spoons Lil Buckaroo – they each won $11,251.

The 41-year-old Thompson lives in Buffalo, Texas, with his wife, Sasha, and their two sons, Chase (11) and Catch (7). In December, Thompson and Oh Miss Caroline won the National Cutting Horse Association Futurity Open Championship in Fort Worth, Texas. Thompson and Patrick and Laura Collins, who own Oh Miss Caroline, Oh Cay Do Over and Lach Down, decided to give Oh Miss Caroline an extended break.

Oh Cay Do Over, Oh Miss Caroline’s sister, stepped up. The mare by Smooth As A Cat out of Oh Cay Shorty, marked 219 in the go-round. In the finals, Thompson and Oh Cay Do Over rode fourth in the second set.

“We had a good draw and were able to cut some cows that we talked about,” he said. “We sit and study these cattle so hard, cattle that give us signs and tell us they’re going to be good. Sometimes, they’re not. It’s more of a feel thing when you get down there in that herd.”
