Western Horseman has released Backcountry Basics, Your Guide to Solving Common Problems on the Trail. Written by American Quarter Horse Association Professional Horseman Mike Kinsey of Belton, S.C., and Western Horseman Senior Editor Jennifer Denison, Backcountry Basics was inspired by the pair’s award-winning series created for the magazine.

Trail riding is a popular horseback activity, yet few riders prepare their horses to make the most of wilderness adventures-and do so safely. In Backcountry Basics, Kinsey explains how any rider can help his horse at home to reliably and responsively meet challenges along the trail.

The longtime professional shares his proven insights into equine psychology, as well as his practical, no-nonsense solutions to common behavioral problems on the trail-refusals at water-crossings and other obstacles, snacking on the trail, buddy-bound tantrums, spooking, jigging and more. Chapters on tack, trail etiquette and traveling different types of terrain round out this informative reference.

Kinsey’s "tell it like it is" philosophy and step-by-step approach in Backcountry Basics help gradually develop a horse’s trust, confidence and willingness. This results in a safer and more enjoyable backcountry experience for everyone.

Backcountry Basics, 8.5 by 11 inches and 215 pages, is well-illustrated with full-color photographs taken by longtime equine-industry professional John Brasseaux. Review copies are available upon request.
