Dr. Lowder,

I don’t know who to write to for an answer to my question. I hope you can direct me in the right direction.

My boyfriend is allergic to horses and I love horses. I know that people who are allergic to cats aren’t allergic to certain breeds ie. Siamese. Are there certain breeds of horses (the Curlies maybe) that people who are usually allergic, wouldn’t be allergic to?

This was a hard question to word properly, I hope you can understand it.

Thank you for your time and cooperation.

Sincerely,
Karrie Pence

Karrie,

I have had a few students like your boyfriend. Most case are not so much the horse but the mold, dirt and dust that come with the horse.

However, there are those for which the horses hair causes the problems and other than allergy medicine there is not much to do. I don’t know of anyone who has ever been desensitized to horses.

Thanks,
Dr. Lowder
