I have been in the horse business for 45 yrs and this one stumps me!!! A week ago I traded for a 13-14 yr-old mare. She has been running on 650 acres and given alfalfa hay once or twice a week. The man I traded with had her for 8 months. She was in pretty badddd shape then and now.

When we got her home I started her on a come back diet, good costal hay (9 to 11‰ protein) and a handful of sweet feed, (9‰ protein) and wormed her. Now here’s the problem.

She eats good, drinks water, passes manure, urine and gas. The next thing I know she’s laying down. In a 24-hour period she is down 20. She loves to be handled, ridden, but being 300 lbs under weight we don’t ride her that much.

My 8 yr old grandson rides her. Could this be a reaction from the wormer and recieving better treatment. Temp. 101. Your input would be appreciated and should I go ahead and worm her again?

Thank you
Don Gray

Don,

It could be that she is just weak. I would stop all riding for a few weeks and give her some time to get her energy back. If she continues to do this have your vet run some blood work on her.

Thanks,
