What is a bone cyst in the stifle area, and how serious is it? I am looking at purchasing a yearling stallion who in a pre-purchase exam by another prospective buyer, showed to have a bone cyst in the stifle area. The x-rays were done by portable machine, and the owner will have them redone. What is the cause and prognosis of a bone cyst?

Thanks

Hello:

A bone cyst is a breakdown in the cartilage of the joint. Depending upon the size and location (within the joint) the cyst can be very serious and in most cases only get worst with time. Most horses require surgery to correct the problem.
