I have a two year old mare that I just purchased. She is a conformation mare. I bought her to show. She has come down with a bad case of the Hives.

It is getting worse each time she gets them. She is a mess. Her legs look like rain rot and she has gotten stocked up and is having trouble breathing. I had our vet take a blood test to see if we can find out what she is allergic to.

What should I do?

Start thinking about what has changed in the last couple of weeks. There has to be something that has changed. If you cannot think of it start reducing the various thing around the barn that the mare has had contact with.

For example, bedding, hay, new buckets, etc. There has to be something. You may end up putting the mare on steroids and antibiotics.

Thanks,

Dr. Lowder:

Thank you! I had her tested and she came back positive for pigweed, pennisilium, and borderline to Timothy. Now what do I do? We have Pigweed in our fields and our hay. I have been giving her dexamethazone 10cc almost every third day. It can’t be good for her. How do you feel about a complete feed? Eliminate the hay all together? I don’t know what else to do for her? She is so young and such a nice mare.

Thank you!

Yes, try her on a complete pelleted feed. I would take her off the Dex. If you need you may try prednisone.

Thanks,
