Thyroid

Dr.Lowder,

Hi! Have a question about my horse. She has a knot in her throat/neck. I was told it was a thyroid gland and I was just wondering what exactly what the thyroid gland is, what it looks like and where it is located. And if this could be dangerous to her health. If there is way you could help us, will you please e-mail me back!

Thanks!
Amber

Dear Amber,
The thyroid is a gland of your horse’s endocrine system. This gland produces specific hormones that circulate through your horse’s body and perform specialized functions. Enlargement of this gland is referred to as a goiter. Well-documented cases of thyroid dysfunction in horses are rare. Other structures that might cause swelling in this area include abscesses, enlarged lymph noded, guttural pouches, and generalized edema. If you feel that this knot is abnormal, I would suggest a visit from your veterinarian to rule out any possible problems.

Thank you,
Dr. Lowder
