Dr. Lowder:

I own two mares in foal, one paint, one thoroughbred and have heard conflicting reports regarding vaccination schedule. One person says at 5,7 & 9 months. The other says at 5 and 9 months, the reason being these vaccines are very hard on the horse and really not necessary at the 7 month period. I live in a cold climate and the horses are not socialized with any other horses so flu/rhino virus spreading would seem at a minimum. I would appreciate hearing your vaccine schedule for broodmares.

Thanks.

Marg,

All broodmares should be vaccinated at 5, 7, & 9 months of gestation for rhino (you are vaccinating against the abortion form of the disease) and at 10 months with a four-way. Deworm the mare on the day of foaling.

Thanks, Dr. Lowder
