Could you tell me what would be the proper worming schedule, and which wormers to rotate, and how often? I was recently told that one tube of zimectrin or strongaid is not enough, you should double them, and also you should have a vet come out and tube worm them twice a year.

I live in Michigan, any info would be great. Thank you! My horse weighs 1165 pounds.

Thanks
Tracy

Tracy,

Most people deworm about every 6-8 weeks which is too often in most cases. In the winter time in Michigan you should not have to worry about deworming at all. The best way I think is to deworm every 6-8 weeks during the summer with a non-ivermectin dewormer and deworm with a ivermectin dewormer in the spring and fall after the first frost.

The only dewormer that you will have to use twice the normal dosage is those used for tape worms.

Consult with your vet about this, it may not be a problem in you area.

Thanks,
Dr. Lowder
