Dr. Lowder:

This is probably a stupid question to you since you’re on the other side of the nation. I live and board in the city. We live in a financially handicapped area at that. No vets will come to us because the area is filled with deadbeats that don’t pay. I am an honest girl with good intentions. If my baby needs help, how do I get treatment for her?

I have no trailer (yet) and the nearest emergency location is a good 1 and 1/2 hours away with no traffic. Us upstanding, honest folk are paying with our horses lives and because we have no choices, the vets who will reluctantly come charge a fortune.

Do you have any words of advice? Isn’t it almost a breaking of the veterinary creed to refuse to help? I’d do it myself if it didn’t take 8 years!

Is there at least a vet bible that is a good tool with regard to minor to medium problems that can keep us out of trouble most of the time? Do you know anyone near me that travels?

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

Paula:

Vets … like all people like to get paid and have bills that need paying. I would suggest that you contact a near by vet and make arrangements to be on their herd health program if they have one.

Employ the vet to do your vaccinations, deworming, etc., and not just depend on them for emergencies. If this does not work then you are going to have to get a trailer.

You may have to find a hauler that will come pick up your horse during times of emergency and take her to the vet for you.

Good Luck,
Dr. Lowder
