Dr. Lowder:

I have a mare that has always foaled 2 weeks before her due date. Now that I own her she is going full term and possibly over. The gestation is how many days? And does this happen with ponies? I think her previous owner miscalculated the date that she bred with last years baby. She is not happy at staying in a stall. We take her out and turn her in a corral where she can move around. Her stall is very roomy, even for full sized horses. She just prefers the corral. Someone told me she was waiting to have that foal out in that corral. Is this true? I want you to know that we really like the horsecity site…

Catherine,

The normal gestation for a horse is 11 months (333-345 days). Some other like people will go pass their due date. How does the mare look? Does she look like she is feeling fine and just waiting for the pregnancy to get over with. I took would let her have as much exercise as possible. Don’t get in a rush and just monitor her closely.

Thanks, Dr. Lowder
