Hi! I recently purchased a ten month old QH colt. He has not been on any wormers yet. I want to keep him healthy, and was wondering how I should start him out. I plan on giving him Strongid 2X, but am not sure what paste wormers to use since he’s never been on them before. What schedule should I go by?

Thanks

Sarah,

I would suggest that you have a fecal examination done by your local vet to determine what specific type of parasites infestation your horse has and the concentration of the worms. How often you rotate dewormers depends on the conditions of the horse’s pasture, the deworming schedule of the other horses they are stabled with and how effective the dewormer was. I would rotate between an ivermectin base dewormer and a non-ivermectin dewormer (eg, fenbendazole).

Thanks,
Dr. Lowder
