Dr. Lowder:

Thanks, Ann

Ann,

The term "Red Bag" refers to premature placental separation. In this condition the placental prematurely separates from the uterus and the mare tries to delivery the entire fetoplacental unit with the chorion membrane intact (the red bag). The fetus frequently dies perinatally from hypoxia. The two main reasons for premature placental separation is (1) fescue grass toxicity and (2) stress in combination with excessive nutrition.

Thanks, Dr. Lowder
