I would like to know some info regarding equine heart murnur? Someone in my area is giving a 3 yr old filly AQHA to a good home. I was told her vet look at this filly and said it had a heart murmur and could never be riden. She told me it could only be a companion or broodmare. I was wondering of possible risks involved and could this filly be able to become a broodmare? What’s the risks with other horse chasing her and could it harm her? Cherri

Cherri,

The heart murmur must be significant to say that she can not be ridden. It should not be a problem in terms of breeding her nor being chased around in the pasture.

Thanks,
Dr. Lowder
