Dr. Lowder:

My daughter’s 8 yr old registered paint gelding has been diagnosed with bilateral temporohyoid osteoarthropathy & corneal ulcers in right eye. Have you heard of this or of other horses afflicted with this condition? The right side of his face if paralyzed & the muscles have atrophied. He is susceptible to bone breakage if any pressure put on his face, i.e. Halter, bridle, thus it has been recommended that he no longer be ridden, which ends his show & team roping career.

Karen,

The corneal ulcers are they active or healed? If your horse has the problems you described then, I too, think he should be retired.

Thanks,
Dr. Lowder
