Older mare due to foal in January

I bred my 16 year old quarter horse mare for the first time. She is due to foal January 30, 2001. We thought she would be difficult to breed, so we took her in early and she took the first time. What problems and complications should we expect? Will this be any different from a younger maiden horse giving birth?

Thank you for any advice.

Melissa,

Sixteen is not usually old for a mare to be bred for the first time. She should be fine and just make sure that she has good nutrition and is properly vaccinated. In addition to the your normal vaccines you should have her vaccinated for rhinopneumonitis by your veterinarian at 5, 7, and 9 months of gestation.

Thanks,
Dr. Lowder
