The final three berths in the December 17, $400,000 Champion of Champions (G1) will be determined in Friday’s (November 23rd) Z. Wayne Griffin Director’s Stakes (G3) at Los Alamitos.

Rod and Jackie MacPherson’s Separatist, the reigning champion two-year-old colt which just missed earning a Champion of Champions berth when he ran second to Corona Kool in the November 18 Los Alamitos Derby (G1), is expected to start in the Z. Wayne Griffin. Ranked No. 1 in the AQHA Racing Poll, the colt by Chicks Beduino has won seven of nine races this season — including four stakes — and leads all three-year-olds with earnings of $250,113.

"Unless something unforeseen occurs, Separatist will race in the Z. Wayne Griffin," said trainer John Cooper.

Others expected to vie for one of the three spots include champions Corona Cash, IBA Dasher and Hes My Dasher; Rainbow (G1) and Dash For Cash (G1) derby winner Significant Speed; and Grade 1 winners Bono Jazz, My Dashing Lady, Policy Tacs, Willie Wanta Dash and Worth A Look.

Run each year since 1972, the Champion of Champions is American Quarter Horse racing’s richest race for older horses. Click here for a complete list of the horses that have already qualified to this year’s race.
