Winter Blanketing
By Michael Lowder, DVM, MS
Hello Dr. Lowder,
I'm just wondering about winter blanketing. I have a Thoroughbred mare that is very thin skinned and really hates the cold. I am thinking about getting her a winter blanket. She is turned our from about 6:00 am to 6:00 pm on a general day (weather permitting), and brought in for the night. Where her turn out field is, there aren't many trees to block some of the winds (The barn is right at the peek of a hill).
She is brought in whenever it gets nasty out oh she feels its too cold for her. She has a nice thick winter coat but still finds it cold. Should I get a blanket to blanket her? Thanks very much for your time!
Kelly
Kelly,
I would. There are some really good blankets on the market now that will protect the horse from rain and wind. Spend the money and get a nice one and you won't regret it.
Thanks, Dr. Lowder
