Spaying mares

By Michael Lowder, DVM, MS

Dr. Lowder,
Where do you stand on spaying a mare with an over-active ovary that causes the mare a lot of pain and therefore creates a lot of havoc for everyone. But most of all the mare.

Nancy

Nancy
I have no problem spaying a mare as long as the owners understand that they will never be able to breed her. I would try the mare on Regu-Mate first and see if that helps. If it does then you will know that spaying will help.

Thanks,
Dr. Lowder
