U.S. participants fare well at Aachen on the road to Jerez

HorseCity.com Contributor

The U.S. had several successful participants in the World Equestrian Festival in Aachen, Germany, June 25-30, 2002.

In the CDIO Dressage Competitions, Lisa Wilcox had a fourth place in the Grand Prix Freestyle to Music with Relevant (Rubinstein I-Havanna), a 10-year-old, Oldenburg stallion. The pairing of Wilcox and Relevant also finished in 12th position in the Grand Prix CDIO and ended up 11th in the Grand Prix Special CDIO. Guenter Seidel piloted Nikolaus 7 (Weinberg x Elise), a 13-year-old Westphalian gelding to a 13th place finish in the Grand Prix CDIO, an eighth place finish in the Grand Prix Special CDIO and an eighth place in the Grand Prix Freestyle to Music.

The combination of Wilcox, Seidel and Christine Traurig, who was paired with Etienne (Ehrentusch x Andora), a 14-year-old, Westphalian gelding, rode to the fourth spot in the team competition. The CDIO of Aachen was an observation trial for team members for the 2002 World Equestrian Games. However, due to quarantine restrictions on mares, top qualifier Brentina, ridden by Debbie McDonald did not competeÑthey will join the other team members at a later competition. Also, third qualifier Flim Flam and Sue Blinks elected to skip Aachen, and will also join the observation tour at a later date.

In addition to their success in the Grand Prix ring, Seidel and Wilcox had good placings on younger horses. Wilcox placed second in the Prix St. Georges and third in Intermediate I, riding Royal Diamond (Rubinstein x Elektia V, by Inschallah), an eight-year-old, Oldenburg stallion. Wilcox also grabbed the third spot in the Freestyle to Music, Intermediate I Level, with Royal Diamond.

In addition, Wilcox placed second in the special trophy ranking for the Best Dressage Women riders of the entire event, presented by the Liselott Schindling Foundation for the Promotion of Dressage Riding Sport. Seidel was 13th in the Prix St. Georges and 13th in the Intermediate I, aboard Metropolitan (Olympic Ferro x Gea), an eight-year-old, Dutch Warmblood gelding.
