Adriano Moraes wins PBR in Colorado Springs

Adriano Moraes is one year older and $25,210 richer tonight. The two-time and defending Professional Bull Riders' Bud Light Cup World Champion celebrated his 32nd birthday with a win at the Colorado Springs (Colo.) Bud Light Cup, the 17th stop on the PBR's Bud Light Cup Series presented by Las Vegas.

The Colorado victory marked Moraes' second consecutive year to leave Colorado Springs with his name attached to the event title. He and Justin McBride shared the 2001 Colorado Springs title. The win also marked Moraes' second Bud Light Cup title of the 2002 season. He also won the 2002 Anaheim (Calif.) Open in February.

"I just thank God for this incredible gift," said Moraes of Cachoeira Paulista, Sao Paulo, Brazil. "This is a great birthday present. I am so thankful that I can get on these great bulls week after week."

Moraes was the only rider on the event's 45-man roster to successfully ride each of his three bulls. He rode Herrington Cattle Co.'s bull Super Dude for 88.5 points in Round One and in Round Two posted 84 points on Richard Vela's bull Night Train. Though neither scores placed Moraes high in either round, his preliminary-round efforts advanced him to the 15-man Built Ford Tough Championship Round in which he was matched with Berger Bucking Bulls' DeWalt Challenge.

Moraes matched moves with DeWalt Challenge for 91.5 points - the highest-scoring ride of the two-day event - to win the round and boost his three-round total to 264 points. His three-round total beat out second-place finisher Chris Shivers, the 2000 Bud Light Cup World Champion. Shivers, 23, rode two of his three bulls for 179.5 points to earn $17,860.

McBride led the competition after Round Two and had a shot at the title. However, he was bucked off in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round by Herrington Cattle Company's bull Locomotive Breath, the same bull he rode last year to share the Colorado Springs title with Moraes. This year he settled for third place with 176.5 points.

Moraes' success in Colorado Springs propelled him to fifth in the 2002 Bud Light Cup Points standings with 4,145 points. Jim Sharp, as he has for most of the 2002 season, leads the standings with 5,837.5 points. Oregon cowboy Ross Coleman remains in second place with 4,893.5 points.

OTHER NOTES FROM THE COLORADO SPRINGS BUD LIGHT CUP: ¥ Chad Castillo of Stephenville, Texas, rode Loe & Williams' bull Smokin' Joe for 90 points to win the round and $2,730. He also earned the right to challenge the designated Mossy Oak Shoot Out bull, Chad Herrington's bull Rampage, for $20,000. The 22-year-old bull rider gave it his best but came up short on Rampage, a bull that PBR Livestock Director Cody Lambert calls "one of the most dreaded bulls in the PBR." The Mossy Oak Shoot Out prize increases to $25,000 next Friday in Nampa, Idaho.
