The first installation of Mesquite Championship Rodeoâs 2002 season drew some of the PRCAâs top hands. In calf roping, Wade White of Richfield, Wis., edged seven-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Blair Burk for the title. White tied his calf in 8.2 seconds and won $1,477. Darran Robertson rode Rafter G Rodeo Companyâs bull Captain Chaos for 81 points to win the bull riding title. The Weatherford, Texas, cowboy earned $1,164. Mesquite Championship Rodeo is renowned for having some of the best bulls in the business. In fact, Rafter G Rodeoâs bull Durango finished the 2001 Mesquite Championship Rodeo season unridden. The bull was later ridden by Mike Moore of Fort Collins, Colo., at the Wrangler ProRodeo Tour Finale in Dallas. Moore scored 94 points. In bareback riding Ron Leger of Madisonville, Texas, and Jesse Christensen of Odessa, Texas, each scored 77 points to share the title. Each cowboy won $665. Jason Milam of Cleburne, Texas, and Pete Ellis of Fort Worth, Texas, shared the saddle bronc riding title by each scoring 75 points. The cowboys won $652 each. In steer wrestling Jerrod Pillans of Streetman, Texas, and Bart Bailey of Okmulgee, Okla., edged Jack Danielâs World Standings leader Joey Bell Jr. and all-around hand Cash Myers for the title. Both Pillans and Bailey threw their steers in 4.5 seconds and earned $1,028. Mary Roberts turned the cloverleaf pattern in 16.04 seconds to claim the barrel racing title. Roberts of Weatherford, Texas, pocketed $737 for the win. Louisiana cowboys dominate at Tiger Country PRCA rodeo Jared Lavergne of Ville Platte, La., scored 85 points to win the bareback riding title at the Tiger Country PRCA Rodeo in Gonzales, La. Lavergne is one of the hottest bareback riders of the early spring season. In addition to the $559 Lavergne won in Gonzales, the cowboy also won the bareback riding title at the Laughlin River Stampede and is fourth in the Jack Danielâs World Standings. In saddle bronc riding, Cody DeMoss of Crowville, La., scored 76 points and won $590. Hometown steer wrestler Mike Waguespack and Ronnie Deville of Baton Rouge, La. each threw his steer in 4.3 seconds to share the title. Each cowboy won $696. Brad Wildey of Covington, La., tied his calf in 9.2 seconds to take the calf roping title and $1,009. The only out-of-state cowboy to win an event in Gonzales was Tavrsus Stubbs of Prairieview, Texas, who topped all other bull riders with an 82 point ride. Stubbs took $1,069 away from the Tiger Country PRCA Rodeo. Tickets for the USST Co. Cup Finale in Las Vegas, Nev. on sale Tickets for the 2002 edition of the U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company Cup Finale, June 13-15 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., are on sale now.
