A few strides out, we use our flat work to half-halt and get our horse to bring his front end up and bring his hind end underneath him. As you get better at this, you can work at slightly faster speeds to prepare for cross-country, however, always use common sense. A small log like this one doesn't need to be jumped at light-speed. The speed at Novice level is 350 to 400 meters per minute slightly faster than a show hunter's speed.
