Road to Pocatello concludes with three circuit finals
The final three circuit finals rodeos completed action last weekend Ð California, First Frontier and Turquoise Ð filling in the final pieces for the Dodge National Circuit Finals Rodeo, March 19-22 in Pocatello, Idaho.
In the Turquoise Circuit Finals in Lake Havasu City, Ariz., veteran and perennial Wrangler National Finals Rodeo competitor Brent Lewis won the calf roping average title, recording a time of 25.9 seconds on three head. The victory clinched his sixth consecutive year-end title and eighth overall. Each circuit's year-end champions, along with each circuit finals rodeo average champions, qualify for the DNCFR. If the year-end champion and the average champion are the same, the runner-up in the year-end standings qualifies for Pocatello. Other winners in Lake Havasu City included Gary Gordon, bareback riding, 243 points on three; Damian Padilla, steer wrestling, 25.9 seconds on three; Rube Woolsey/Matt Sherwood, team roping, 18.0 on three; Justen Washburn, saddle bronc riding, 235 on three; Cody Hancock, bull riding, 236 on three; and Sheri Estrada, barrel racing, 47.89 on three runs. In the California Circuit Finals in Norco, nine-time Wrangler NFR team roper Daniel Green won his first average title in calf roping, stopping the clock in 32.2 seconds on three head. Green also was the circuit's year-end all-around and team roping (heading) champion. Other average champions in Norco included Alex Meroshnekoff, bareback riding, 248 points on three; Vince Walker, steer wrestling, 13.3 seconds on three; David Motes/Ryan Motes, team roping, 25.5 on three; Joe Willoughby, saddle bronc riding, 228 on three; Jeff Nisen, bull riding, 248 on three; and Lyndee Stairs, barrel racing, 50.09 on three runs. In the First Frontier Circuit Finals Rodeo, held at the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg for the first time, all-around hand Carmine Nastri claimed the rodeo's calf roping title. He roped and tied three calves in a time of 31.2 seconds on three head. The victory clinched his fourth year-end title in a row and his 10th overall. Other winners in Harrisburg included Luis Escudero, bareback riding, 233 points on three; Chad Stoltzfus, steer wrestling, 17.0 seconds on three; Cody Warner/Shawn Quinn, team roping, 37.0 seconds on three; Marty Barnes, saddle bronc riding, 234 points on three; Kevin Clanton, bull riding, 206 points on three; and Jennifer Romriell, barrel racing, 46.35 seconds on three.
