Seniors Turn up the Heat at 2002 NBHA World Show
Tuesday saw the conclusion of the first go-round of the Senior competition at the 2002 NBHA World Championship Show in Augusta, Georgia. This year's Senior competition pits 365 of the world's top over-50 barrel racers against each other for more than $36,000 in prize money and four World Champion titles.
An Indiana barrel racer set the 1D pace in round one of the Seniors; Nancy Hopkins of Brazil, Indiana, ran a 14.543 aboard Moe Money Myers for a $620 payday. Carolyn Raxter and Champs Best Money of Zachary, Louisiana, topped the 2D with a 15.055, good for $540. Carl Strickland and Effortly Smooth took the 3D win and $381 home to Douglas, Georgia. Another home-state rider, Milton Watkins of Canton, split first place in the 4D with Vicky Nordan of Robertsdale, Alabama; both ran a 16.555 worth $264 paychecks. Round two of the Seniors concludes on Thursday. The top 10 in each division in each go-round advance to the Senior finals on Friday night, where four 2002 Senior world champions will be crowned. More than 950 competitors of all ages are competing for over $172,000 in this week's Open competition, which also consists of two go-rounds and a finals.
