The 10th anniversary National Barrel Horse Association World Championship Show kicked off Monday October 28 with the year's hottest barrel racing team smashing World Show records.

Tanya Steinhoff and her buckskin gelding "Hot Shot" set a new arena record in the one-run Sweepstakes to kick off World Show week in high style. Their time of 13.914 broke the previous arena record of 14.066 (a record Steinhoff and Hot Shot set at last year's NBHA World Show) and was the only time in the 1D of the Sweepstakes, earning a record paycheck of $16,205 - all money allotted to the 1D - for 12-year-old Steinhoff and her 15-year-old equine partner. The pair are two-time NBHA Youth World Champions who are aiming to earn an Open World Championship at this year's Open World Show.

The Sweepstakes' next fastest time was a 14.532 run by Chuck Tolbert of Olney, Illinois, and What A Sharp Chick, 2001's Senior 1D NBHA World Champions. They earned top honors in the 2D and a paycheck for $2,792. The 3D Sweepstakes win went to Goodwell, Oklahoma's Chancy Etbauer, riding Zan Bay Freckles to a time of 14.914, good for $1,895. Jack Williams and Target Smokey Pine took the 4D win and $1,446 home to Robbins, North Carolina. Complete Sweepstakes results are available at www.NBHA.com.

The 641-entry Sweepstakes competition kicked off the 2002 NBHA World Show, which features two go-rounds and finals for both Open and Senior competitors. Round 1 of the Senior competition concludes Tuesday, with the first round of Open wrapping up on Wednesday. Senior finals are Friday night, followed by Open finals on Saturday night.
