I am in SE Michigan and we are beginning what looks to be a rough winter.
I have an 18 year old Gelding that I got about a year ago. He was an only horse for about 5 years. He now share the paddock with a 21 year old Mare. She's the alpha but very tolerant and gentle.
My Gelding has lost a considerable amount of weight in the last six months. About a month ago I had his teeth fixed. He is eating better and slowly gaining some weight.
I feed hay/alfala mix twice a day. There is no grass ares for grazing on my property. Between the two horses they get a full bale of hay daily. I also grain them every evening with a 3-1 mix of crimped oats and cracked corn. I have also increased his portion of grain by adding Platform Senior to his ration.
Is there anything else I can do to build him up? The winter can be very difficult and cold in this area of the country.
Your help will be appreciated.
It sounds like you are doing good with the feeding program but I would let them have as much hay as they will eat. It will help give them energy to heat themselves.
Also, talk with you vet about an anabolic steroid shot to boost his muscle mass.
