Hello,

My name is Lauren and I have a 7 year old S.S.H.B.E.A mare. She is the sweetest horse ever. I have had her for about a year now and when I first got her I checked her over real well and of course I am not a vet but I saw nothing visibly wrong with her.

About six or seven months ago I noticed that she was very swollen around her teats. I know that mares will swell up when they go into season but it has gotten larger. The swollen area did not seem to bother her for a while but about a month ago I was pressing down on her there to see if there her any lumps and she attempted to kick me. She has never tried to kick me before even when I clean in between her teats.

I called my vet and she said that I shouldn’t worry about it but she would not listen to everything that I was telling her. So I was wondering what your opinion was on it.

Thank you very much.

Lauren

Lauren,

I too would not be very concerned and it is best to leave the teats alone. Pressing on them will only inflamed them. Read the article on mastitis and see if this sounds like your mare.

Thanks,
